Feeding Your Senior Dog-4 Tips
4 Tips to help your Senior dog age gracefully:
- Keep their weight at a healthy level, you may have to cut treats in half, or switch to some of the 4 calorie treats we have available at Ddogs-Zuke’s Mini Naturals, Fruitables or a quarter of a Soft Wellbites is 3.5 calories.
- Feed your dog the highest quality food you can afford, packed with quality fiber sources such as flaxseed, fruits and vegetables. Avoid fillers like soybean, wheat and corn at all ages! All the foods at Ddogs are carefully selected for maximum nutrition
- Watch the protein levels in their food, older dogs may not need as much protein as a younger, active dog. Adding fruits and vegetables to the diet works or switching to a food especially for Seniors-Wellness Complete Health Senior or even Small Breed Complete Health Senior. One I have used is Holistic Health by Solid Gold-not special for Seniors, but a lower protein content.
- Up the antioxidants-back to more fruits and veggies! And eggs. Vitamin E, C and A, carotenes and Beta-carotene are also key to great health and nutrition. And give a variety of foods! I love the Fromm Family (4 Star Nutritionals) brand of foods as you can switch flavors with each bag you buy, giving your dog lots of variety in their foods and a variety of naturally occurring nutrients.
